Wiley and the Hairy Man

An African American oral tale

Produced: March, 1991
Bridgewater State College
Director: Lee Dunne
Scenery: Arthur Dirks
Facility: Campus Center Auditorium

The play is a traditional African American tale, primarily a swamp story. The director's concept here was to use a chorus of furies who lived in a tree. The show was built well forward of the proscenium over the orchestra pit, and the wings narrowed in. The flown boards marked the home of Wiley and his mother for scenes played there. The background was a black scrim revealing a lit cyc.
