The Magic Flute

By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Produced: October, 2008
Bridgewater State College
Director: Henry Shaffer
Scenery: Arthur Dirks
Facility: Campus Center Auditorium

In the 1980s the College foundation supported annual tours by the New York City opera, but the college had never produced an opera on its own. The director loved opera and sought to introduce BSC audiences and students to it.

The production employed a professional orchestra conducted by Dr. Steven Young in the Department of Music, and included a couple of professional singers as well as both theater and vocal music students. Production operation and management was by the Department of Theater and Dance.

Sadly, at the time of production Prof. Shaffer was undergoing treatment for lung cancer, to which he succombed in December, 2008.
