Anything Goes

By Cole Porter and Bolton, Wodehouse, Lindsay & Crouse

Produced: May, 1978
Wayne State College
Director: Arthur Dirks
Scenery: Arthur Dirks
Facility:Ramsey Auditorium
Notes:

In 1978 we began mounting a musical in a 3-week May session. It was cast early and the principles had most of their lines and all of their music down before the session began. It was the only time of the year many very good actors and students could take a break from pre-med and other pressure programs. We did two 4-hour calls a day, plus some volunteer time, and had a precise schedule that coordinated production work with rehearsals.

We conceived this production as the entire audience joining the cruise. Tickets were boarding passes and they were taken by the bursar. The band was located behind the action so the performance could move into the house. The revival scene was done in the audience, and a finely rehearsed choral "Public Enemy" was done from the balcony where so many Christmas choral pieces typically were performed. Company members also performed intermission cabaret in the lobby under their own direction.
